Prescribed fire at Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area May 4th, 2022

Hello everyone! On May 4th, 2022 the Canadian Wildlife Service prescribed fire crew successfully conducted a prescribed fire at Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area (LML NWA).

We implemented a full year’s management on approximately 200ac of habitat…in a single day!

Our goal was to remove the standing and matted dead wetland vegetation remaining from the flooded wetland created by a dam on Lanigan Creek – the same dam that we removed in Oct 2019, in partnership with DUC.

This fire will both remove a dense mat of dead reeds *and* fertilize the soil. The seed bank and seeded natural vegetation will then be free to thrive and return this site to a low saline grassland.

Thanks to everyone who was part of this, including those who worked towards having this plan approved with COVID-19 mitigations.
